Umbwe 6 Day Route

Day 1:  PRE-CLIMB ORIENTATION
After a leisurely breakfast you will meet your Mountain Guides and group leaders where they will discuss the climb program, mountaineering and group expectations, hazards on the mountain, sickness prevention, etc.  The guides will also answer any questions you may have about the climb.  They will also do an equipment and gear check on each climber to make sure you are prepared and have everything you need for the climb.  After pre-climb orientation the day is yours to relax and get well rested before beginning the climb tomorrow.

Day 2:  DRIVE FROM ARUSHA TO THE UMBWE TRAILHEAD
(Day 1 on Mountain)
After breakfast, your driver and mountain guide will pick you up and drive you to the Umbwe Gate where you will check in and register.  You will begin your hike at the Umbwe trailhead. You will enjoy lunch on the trail, before continuing your hike to Umbwe Cave Camp for overnight.

Ending Elevation: 9,514 ft (2,900 m)
Distance Hiked: 7 miles (11 km)
Approximate Hiking Time: 5-7 hours

Day 3:  HIKE FROM UMBWE CAVE CAMP TO BARANCO CAMP
(Day 2 on Mountain)
After breakfast, you will begin your day on the trail on a very steep path and a short scramble over and around rocks. You will be hiking through the Rainforest before entering into the Upper Moorlands as you make your way to Baranco Camp.

Ending Elevation: 12,795 ft (3,900 m)
Distance Hiked: 4 miles (6 km)
Approximate Hiking Time: 4-5 hours

Day 4:  HIKE FROM BARANCO CAMP TO KARANGA CAMP
(Day 3 on Mountain)
After breakfast, you will continue your hike with a scramble up “The Great Baranco Wall” using your hands in spots to help you maneuver around the rocks and boulders.  You will arrive at Karanga Camp for lunch, and a much-needed rest before embarking on an afternoon acclimatization hike, returning to camp in time for dinner.

Distance Hiked: 3.5 miles (5.5 km)

Day 5:  HIKE FROM KARANGA CAMP TO BARAFU HUT CAMP
(Day 4 on Mountain)
After breakfast, you will continue your hike through the Alpine Dessert with views of Kibo’s glaciers as you hike.  You will also be able to see Heim, Kersten and Decken glaciers.  You will arrive at camp for lunch.  You will spend some time resting before going on a short acclimatization hike returning to camp to rest and sleeping to re-gain as much energy as you can.  You will wake at 11pm to get ready for your hike to the summit.

Day 6:  HIKE FROM BARAFU HUT CAMP TO THE SUMMIT TO MWEKA HUT CAMP
(Day 5 on Mountain)
After a small snack and the clock striking midnight, you will begin your ascent up the summit.  You will hike via headlamps through the Arctic climate zone.  You will pass through Stella Point at 18,885 feet (5,756 m) before continuing on for another 45 minutes to Uhuru Peak, “The Roof of Africa” at 19,341 feet (5,895 m).  Once you have celebrated this great accomplishment, you will begin your descent down the mountain.  You will stop for lunch and a short rest at Barafu Hut Camp before proceeding down the mountain to Mweka Hut Camp.

Ending Elevation: 10,171 ft (3,100 m)
Distance Hiked: 10.5 miles (17 km)
Approximate Hiking Time: 12-16 hours

Day 7:  HIKE FROM MWEKA HUT TO THE MWEKA GATE AND RETURN TO ARUSHA
(Day 6 on Mountain)
After breakfast, you will continue your hike down the mountain arriving at the Mweka Exit Gate.  Upon your arrival, you will enjoy lunch and a short award ceremony where you will receive your certificate for successfully climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. You will sadly say good-bye to your climbing crew at this time and meet your driver who will drive you back to Arusha where you will enjoy a nice hot shower and time resting and relaxing.

Approximate Hiking Time: 4-6 hours

Day 8:  BEGIN NEXT DAY ACTIVITIES OR FLY BACK HOME
If you are continuing on for a safari, you will begin the day per what is on your itinerary.  If you are proceeding onto another destination, you will continue on with those plans, and if you are returning home, depending on your flight time, you may be able to spend some time in Arusha before you catch your flight back home with great memories of a huge accomplishment to share with your family and friends.
