Mafia Island

Mafia Island, off the coast of Tanzania is one of the Indian Ocean’s hidden gems. With white sandy beaches, dazzling aquamarine waters and refreshingly few tourists, Mafia is often described as Zanzibar 30 years ago. Mafia Island is not geared for mainstream tourism as there are no tarmac roads, few hotels, zero shops and no ATMs. So be warned…if extreme luxury, fancy shops, and wild night-life is what you are looking for, Mafia Island is not for you.
Mafia Island is one of the most exciting diving and fishing areas in the world. A paradise for fishermen, divers, and water sport lovers with major tourist activities like SCUBA diving, big game fishing, snorkeling, beach and offshore excursions. The aqua waters of the Indian Ocean are transparent and glistening, offering fantastic views of unspoiled coral reefs. The large variety of coral opens the waterways for an unimaginable quantity of sea life, with diving and snorkeling sites just a short boat ride away.
Chloe Bay and its surrounding forests and islands are now within the protected Mafia Island Marine Park. Within Chloe Bay, the shallow reefs are perfect for snorkeling or learning how to dive. The entrance to the bay is protected by a long coral wall, attracting more experienced divers. There are more than fifty kinds of coral including giant table corals, huge stands of blue-tipped staghorn coral and more than 400 species of fish.
Note: When you drive across Mafia to transfer to any of the lodges or Chloe Island, you will be going through the Marine Park entrance gate on the main road requiring you to pay daily fees. Be prepared as these fees can only be paid in person at the time of entering the park. These fees are not included in your trip price. You will also need to show your receipt and ticket every time you pass through the gate.
